State Rep. Jim Murphy said this week he will seek re-election to House District 133 in 2008. The district includes west Houston and southwest Harris County.

“When I asked for votes during 2006, I promised to go to Austin to work on the people’s business. I believe we applied ourselves to working on the major issues facing Texas, including immigration, taxes, public safety, and transportation,” Murphy said.

“In the 140 days of the Legislative Session, I believe we made real progress. This included strengthening laws regarding voter registration and providing $100 million for increased border security, cutting local school property taxes by 25 percent, increasing criminal penalties for repeat offenders, reigning in the runaway Trans Texas Corridor, and changing laws to empower local officials in deciding how toll roads should be used.”

Murphy is president of District Management Services. For the past 20 years, he was one of the principal driving forces behind the Westchase District n a 4.2 square mile business district in west Houston. Today, the district is home to over 80,000 employees and residents and is one of Houston’s leading areas for business activity and commercial development. Murphy plans to open a new district office in the area next week (see related article). He won his first two-year term in 2006 with 56 percent of the vote.

“We made positive changes and improvements yet there were some disappointments, like the top 10 percent rule and photo I.D. for voting, and there is more work to be done. I learned a lot this session and was pleased to have leadership roles within my legislative class, within the membership, and in our Republican Caucus,” Murphy said.

“I plan to build upon these successes to do an even better job in my next term and plan to do an even better job in my next term. While the March 2008 primary is months away and the November 2008 election even further, I want you to be assured that my team is preparing early.” Murphy concluded.
