Jim Murphy is a lifelong Republican who has been active in the Party as a grassroots volunteer, candidate, and elected official. A brief look at Murphy's career in business and public service reveals several constant traits: service, leadership, results.
Fighting Crime
Public safety is government's first responsibility. If we are not safe in our homes, little else matters. I worked in Austin to create tough new laws to combat our growing crime problem. I was the joint author of HB 1892 that increased the criminal penalty for repeat offenders for motor vehicle burglary (the #1 crime in District 133). I also authored and passed HB3225 to reduce auto theft in Texas.

Border protection may be a federal obligation, but border enforcement can be addressed at the state level. In Austin, we provided $100 million in new funds for stronger border security. I want to continue fighting this battle for our state until we have results we can be proud of as Texans.
Lowering Taxes
It is imperative for Texans not to be taxed out of their homes. I helped pass a budget that dedicated $14 billion to reduce local school taxes from $1.50 to $1.00. I will continue to fight for a budget which forces government spending to stay below the rate of inflation and population growth. I will also work to eliminate or at least reduce the revised franchise tax and make common sense tax changes.
Transportation
Mobility is vital for our families, our businesses, and our economy. But one project was moving too far too fast and we listened. This past session, through SB792, we stopped the Trans Texas Corridor and ensured that local authorities would control their toll roads. More work needs to be done, and more roads need to be built as our State continues to grow but these decisions need to be discussed in the open and reflect the will and values of Texans.
Affordable Higher Education
As we see a higher priority placed on a college education, we also see a continuous increase in tuition across the state. That is why I voted for HB 3900 that established the Texas Tomorrow Fund II. This creates new saving options to help families pay for higher education by locking in today's rates for tuition and fees. I'll continue this work to ensure both better access and lower cost for our students and their families.
