Westheimer traffic woes due study

Commuters of often-jammed Westheimer Road will have an opportunity at a meeting next Thursday to tell experts how to improve the traffic flow.

Their input will be part of a transportation study to be kicked off at 3-7 p.m. at the Tracy Gee Community Center, 3599 Westcenter Drive.

The Westchase District, which is hosting the meeting, has joined the Houston-Galveston Area Council, the Texas Department of Transportation and the Uptown Houston District to study the Westheimer Corridor.

The roadway, which extends from Loop 610 to Texas 6, links Westchase and Uptown - two business districts - with retail and residential areas, and intersects Sam Houston Tollway, U.S. 59 and Loop 610 - three heavily traveled freeways - and a number of major cross streets.

Jim Murphy, Westchase District general manager, described the corridor as "a major artery for mobility, access, and economic activity in Houston."

Officials said dense commercial development on Westheimer, along with the associated residential and recreational development on cross streets, has caused consistent congestion and frustration for motorists.

The study seeks to identify transportation measures that would improve traffic flow, reduce motorist delay and enhance air quality.

"It is vital that we look at ways to improve traffic flow along Westheimer," said Murphy, "especially in light of the planned construction on Interstate 10, which will cause even more drivers to utilize Westheimer."

Murphy requested the meeting for residents and property owners who use Westheimer daily to participate in the planning process.

"We want to hear from the people who use this corridor and get their ideas for improvements," Murphy said.
