Murphy ready to run in 133

Memorial Examiner News

July 08, 2009

Jim Murphy wants his seat back.

The Republican former representative from West Houston’s House District 133 lost by the slimmest of margins to Democrat Kristi Thibaut last November.

Thibaut won that race with 50.6 percent of the vote to Murphy’s 49.4 percent, a margin of 1.2 percent.

Murphy said that he’s been planning to run since the ballots were counted last year.

“Absolutely it’s been my intention (to run),” he said. “I felt like I was doing a good job, and I want to continue doing the job.”

It sets up the third consecutive battle between Murphy, general manager of the Westchase Management District, and Thibaut, who just completed her first legislative session.

Murphy beat Thibaut soundly in 2006, taking 57 percent of the vote to Thibaut’s 43 percent in the race to replace Joe Nixon.

But Thibaut attacked Murphy’s record and spent nearly as much in 2008, and took advantage of the large Democratic voter turnout last November to eke out the narrow victory.

“I ran on and have a record of leadership and results,” said Murphy. “I want to government to be sound and effective, but limited.”

He said he’s done no real campaigning or fundraising so far, other than sending out letters to supporters and friends. He expects to ramp up the campaign in the months ahead.

Murphy’s first hurdle will be in next March’s primary, if he draws a Republican opponent.

House District 133 stretches roughly from Beltway 8 west to Eldridge, south to Bissonnet and north to Buffalo Bayou and I-10. The district is predominantly Republican in its northern part and Democrat in its southern part.
